Gene Merkl is the Program Manager for the Pesticide Applicator and Recertification Program with Mississippi State Extension. Gene called into the Crop Doctors’ Podcast studio in Stoneville to discuss updates to the pesticide certification training for Mississippi which were mandated nationwide by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and went online July 1, 2024. Trent was promoted to a position as the Associate Director of Extension over Agriculture and Natural Resources beginning April 1, so there was some difficulty getting schedules to line up to get him on a podcast this year. Trent describes his new role with Mississippi State Extension and then moves into the status of the Mississippi soybean crop for 2024.

Glyphosate-resistant goosegrass is present in Mississippi, but not all populations are resistant to that herbicide. Poor control is compounded when circumstances like herbicide mixtures, application volume, hot temperatures, and dry soil condition intersect with each other.
